Te Pae Christchurch

Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8011

The meaning of 'Te Pae'

The name, ‘Te Pae’ draws inspiration from several phrases in te reo Māori:

Te Pae Maunga – our mountain views.

The source of the origin and central to the land and people, mountains are a key element on the southern landscape, just as Te Pae is a central point within Christchurch.

Te Pae Whenua – the vast plains we inhabit.

With the strong ties to mountains and the rivers and plains they create, it is only natural this influence can be found in the building’s design, where shapes and lines represent the contours of the Southern Alps and braided rivers of Canterbury.

Te Pae Tangata – a place to meet and converse.

To talk, to be hosted, to share, entertain and inform… for Christchurch, Te Pae Christchurch is a gathering place.

Te Pae Christchurch is located along the banks of the Ōtākaro Avon River and close to Victoria Park – a tranquil, natural environment in the very heart of the city.

Surrounded by some of the city’s best accommodation establishments, restaurants, bars and markets, the promenade precinct is designed to be easily experienced with a gentle, riverside walk.
